Radon Radiation in Granite Countertops
Prior to mid May, the EPA had the position that there were not enough radionuclide’s in granite to be of concern. It is recommended to test your home anyway.
Now they say that some granites do have enough radiation to be of concern and recommend testing any home with a granite countertop.
The EPA took a 180 turn , maybe a 150 degree turn.
We also have recommended homeowners refuse to install any granite over 25 uR/hr. Background radiation is 7 uR/hr in the State of Washington. From state NORM regulations, 25 seems to be an acceptable risk factor, although it is not completely safe.
Ans yes we have tested many slabs with a reading of 7-8 and do find some with hot spots in the 20’s and higher. A test is the only way to be sure.
We also Certify all slabs with a reading of 25 uR/hr or lower with a Certificate of Radiation. Call us or visit our website to order an onsite Radiation test today 425.608.9553 our results are same day.
